K5.2 BILLION ALLOCATION FOR SOCIAL CASH TRANSFER TO HAVE AN IMPACT ON MITIGATING THE ADVERSE IMPACT OF THE DROUGHT

The Center for Sustainable Democracy and Governance says the K5.2 Billion allocated to the Ministry of Community Development and social security for social Cash Transfer will have a huge impact on mitigating the adverse impact of the drought.
K5.2 Billion from the total K41.9 billion supplementary budget has been allocated to the Ministry of Community Development for the social cash transfer program, which is meant to facilitate the increase of the monthly transfer from K200 to K400 for all 1.3 million existing beneficiaries.
In an interview, Organization Executive Director Caroline Katotobwe says the supplementary budget is a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of Zambians and that the allocation towards social cash transfer will go a long way in remedying the negative impacts that the drought has had on marginalized communities.
Meanwhile, Center for Governance President Patrick Muntanga says government should have included additional funding to small-scale farmers in the revised supplementary budget as they are among the worst hit by the drought.
